Online Collaborative Citizenship Education Program

2011 - 2016

EF’s Online Collaborative Citizenship Education Program worked with Iranian educators to promote youth engagement in their classrooms.

EF’s citizenship education model blends critical thinking skills and an experiential learning pedagogy while examining civic values based on real-life examples of citizen interaction and behavior. Through a series of online courses—on media literacy, citizenship, critical thinking, and conflict resolution—educators were asked to reflect on their own perspectives of citizenship and civic engagement and learn about participatory teaching methods. As part of their coursework, educators created lesson plans, games, and activities to introduce these concepts and skills to their students. As a result of this process, both educators and students gradually become more aware of how their assumptions inform their behavior and the decisions that impact their daily lives.

The program provided a unique space for collaborative learning and engagement. As part of EF’s online pedagogy, educators were encouraged to work with their peers to design interactive curricula, rethink their teaching methods, experiment with new teaching approaches, and share their experiences and observations as they conduct activities in their classrooms. As a result, the program built an extensive repository of localized lesson plans and instructional guides on civic engagement for youth in Iran.
